Together with the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, Austria is planning a coordinated opening of the border, which is to come into force in mid-June. “We have agreed that we want to go down this road together and that we will take Hungary on board”, announced Alexander Schallenberg, the Foreign Minister said on Tuesday after a video conference with his counterparts from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Tomas Petricek and Ivan Korcok.

“The decision on the opening of the border could be taken as early as next week, and the concrete date of the opening of the border will be fixed then,” said Schallenberg. At the moment there is “intensive work on returning to the full freedom of travel as it existed before Corona with the Czechs, Slovaks and Hungarian neighbours from mid-June”.

Border opening with Germany and Switzerland already agreed

Austria has so far only agreed with Germany and Switzerland on a complete opening of the border from mid-June. Border controls on the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary were relaxed unilaterally over the weekend, but entry restrictions remained in place.

No timetable yet for Italy and Slovenia

On Monday evening, the Czech Republic had already announced a relaxation of entry regulations as of 8 June. Slovakia and Hungary have so far maintained their strict entry policies. For Italy and Slovenia there is no timetable yet.
