A British medical doctor gives hope, but other experts disagree with him.
Worldwide, more than 5 million people are now infected with the coronavirus and 330,000 people have died. While an international race for the development of a vaccine has broken out, a British physician is now causing a stir with a controversial thesis. Karol Sikora believes that the corona virus could disappear on its own.
“There is a real chance that the virus will disappear naturally before a vaccine is developed,” the British professor writes on Twitter. The 71-year-old assumes an enormous number of unreported cases and therefore believes in herd immunity. “In my opinion, this is a realistic scenario.” However, at least 60-70% of people would have to be infected.
Experts contradict
Other researchers vehemently contradict Sikora. Medical expert Christoph Specht makes it clear to RTL: “A virus that transmits as easily as SARS-CoV-2, it does not disappear so easily.“ In a few years at the earliest, partial immunization could occur.
Previous studies also show that the number of unreported cases is not as high as some experts feared. All countries are still miles away from herd immunity.
