Now things are moving faster than expected – these regulations will come into force starting Friday, 29 May 2020

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced details of the relaxations, which can come into force next Friday in view of the continuing stable situation in the corona crisis in Austria. The concerned areas are the cultural and event sector, hobby sports and leisure activities, as well as tourism and the hotel industry.

Working in teams or behind Plexiglas

In principle, a clarification is made in the professional context with regard to the distance regulation. If the intended distance of at least one metre between persons cannot be maintained due to “the nature of the occupational activity”, “the risk of infection must be minimized by other suitable protective measures, for example by technical or organisational protective measures”, says the latest amendment to the COVID 19 relaxation regulation. In this context, the formation of fixed teams, the installation of partition walls or Plexiglas walls are listed are possible protective measures.

Distance in the hotel: 1 meter

In accommodation establishments, the guest shall maintain a distance of at least one metre from other persons not living in the common household or not belonging to the group of guests in the common accommodation unit in generally accessible areas. This does not apply “if the risk of infection can be minimized by suitable protective measures for spatial separation”. In the entrance and reception area, mouth-nose protection must continue to be worn.

Weddings and funerals up to 100 guests

For weddings and funerals up to 100 people are allowed. The obligation to protect the mouth and nose does not apply in open air areas.

Future regulations

As of 1 July 2020, events with allocated and marked seating will be permitted indoors for 250 people and outdoors for 500 people. As of 1 August 2020, events with assigned and marked seats are generally permitted in closed rooms for 500 people, in the open air area for 750 people. From this date, events for up to 1,000 persons, in the open air area for up to 1,250 persons are also possible with a corresponding permit from the competent district administrative authority, if a Covid-19 prevention concept is submitted at least four weeks before the event.

No mask when guests are seated

For events in closed rooms, a mechanical protection device covering the mouth and nose area must be worn when entering. This can be deposited at the allocated seat, provided that the distance of one metre to the seat next to the side is not less than one metre and no other suitable protective measures are available. The regulations for events explicitly do not apply to assemblies under the Assembly Act and the Labour Constitution Act, meetings for professional purposes if these are necessary to maintain professional activity, or events for the practice of religion and in private residential areas.

Open fitness studios

Fitness studios will also be allowed to open again next Friday. A two-metre distance must be maintained, but this can be reduced at short notice in exceptional cases. Swimming pools and thermal baths may only be entered after the operator has evaluated his legally stipulated hygienic obligations with regard to the special preventive measures for containing SARS-CoV-2 and has adapted his measures and bathing regulations in line with the latest scientific findings.

On Wednesday afternoon, Health Minister Anschober appealed to the population by press release to “continue to act with common sense, and in particular to observe the rules of distance.
