Travel restrictions imposed due to the Corona pandemic have been lifted. The borders to the eastern neighbours are open, the western neighbours will follow on 15 June. However, there is still no complete freedom to travel, and after returning from most EU countries a negative corona test or a 14-day quarantine is still necessary. Travel warnings also continue to exist.

TRAVEL WARNINGS:

Travel warnings remain in effect for 27 countries due to the coronavirus pandemic. In Europe these are still Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, San Marino, Sweden, Spain, Turkey, the Vatican, Ukraine and Belarus. Outside Europe, the Foreign Ministry has warned against travel to Brazil, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa and the USA because of the pandemic.

OPEN BORDERS:

Since last Thrusdays and Friday respectively, unlimited travel is now possible from Austria to its eastern neighbours Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. From 15 June, the borders of Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein will also be opened. Austria has already lifted its travel restrictions vis-à-vis these three countries, which means that there is no longer any quarantine obligation when entering the country from these countries. However, holiday or shopping trips to Germany and Switzerland are not permitted until mid-June. There are already exceptions for justified entries, including visits to relatives and important family occasions such as weddings, funerals or religious celebrations. Owners of agricultural, hunting or forestry land as well as persons who have to care for animals may also travel to Germany.

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS:

When returning from any other country, Austria still requires a COVID health certificate after a negative corona test or a mandatory 14-day home quarantine.

Nevertheless, some countries have unilaterally opened their borders to Austria. There are therefore no restrictions on entry to these countries. This includes ITALY, which opened its borders to all EU citizens on Wednesday. CROATIA has also lifted the entry restrictions for ten EU countries – apart from Austria, these are Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. SERBIA already lifted the entry restrictions for foreigners at the end of May.

Numerous countries are planning to open their borders for tourists in the coming weeks. CYPRUS, for example, wants to allow tourists from 19 countries – including Austria – to enter the country without any restrictions as of 20 June. SPAIN has announced to lift the two-week compulsory quarantine for all those entering the country on July 1.

Where other countries are relaxing, Great Britain is now introducing stricter regulations. The UK has always allowed unconditional entry and has not introduced border closures or quarantine regulations for those entering the country. However, this is to change on 8 June: …on which date, travellers will be placed in 14-day quarantine.
