The number of new coronavirus infections registered throughout Austria on Tuesday was 520 within the past 24 hours, according to reports from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health. In the last two days, the number of new infections reported from Vienna was comparatively low with 64 cases on Sunday and 75 on Monday – but overall they are increasing. In the past seven days, 159 persons per day tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, whereas the week before, according to the Vienna Crisis Committee, the average was 127.
In terms of absolute figures, 520 new infections also mean that such a high figure was last published on April 2 with 577. Only once were there more than 1,000, namely 1,074 on March 27.
The increase was much smaller for patients requiring hospital treatment: this rose from 163 to 170, with 28 patients in intensive care units – this figure was reduced by one person.
In the past 24 hours, another death was reported in connection with Covid-19. After 30,081 patients, 747 of whom died and 25,629 recovered, there are currently 3,711 actively infected persons throughout Austria.
The 180 other new infections are distributed among the remaining federal states as follows: 56 in Tyrol, 49 in Lower Austria, 27 in Upper Austria and 18 in Vorarlberg. Ten cases each came from Styria and Salzburg, with Carinthia reporting a single-digit increase of six cases and Burgenland four.
Health Minister Rudolf Anschober announced that the new figures would be analyzed. The decisive question is whether this is a one-time “explainable peak – after a longer period of stability – or a rising trend”. “We are analyzing the figures today and tomorrow in the expert advisory board and with the health officers of the federal states,” he said. The figures for the coming days would provide the final information. The Corona Commission, which will meet again on Thursday to discuss the second traffic light on Friday, is also intensively studying the developments.
“It was to be expected that the pandemic would pick up speed again in September and the following months. This is now a decisive phase,” Anschober said in a statement. As far as media reports are concerned, according to which a free vaccination against the corona virus is fixed for all Austrians, Anschober could not confirm this on the fringes of a media event. Of course, he emphasized once again that the aim was to achieve the most barrier-free access possible. But details still had to be negotiated in the government.
