In view of the rapid spread of significantly more infectious variants of the coronavirus, the emergency committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) is bringing forward its next meeting by two weeks. The committee will meet as early as today to discuss current developments, the WHO announced yesterday in Geneva.
In addition, the emergency committee is to discuss the handling of vaccination certificates and coronavirus tests during travel. Afterwards, the expert committee plans to publish recommendations for the WHO and its member states.
Two mutations of the virus have been discovered in recent weeks in the United Kingdom and South Africa that are considered significantly more contagious than previous forms of the pathogen. These mutations have now spread to at least about 50 countries worldwide. In addition, Japan announced Sunday the discovery of another mutation believed to have originated in the Brazilian Amazon. This variant is currently under investigation.
