The 42nd Vienna City Marathon will cause traffic delays starting today. Drivers must expect restrictions on the Ringstraße, for example. The area between Stadiongasse and Schottengasse will be closed from 8.00 p.m.

The finish area between Rathausplatz and Burgtheater will be completed starting Friday. For this reason, the ring road between Stadiongasse and Schottengasse will be closed from 8 p.m. The first races in the city center will occur on Saturday, including the Vienna 5K and the children’s races.

From 12.45 p.m. until around 7.30 p.m., the Ringstraße in the 1st district will be closed in sections from the Urania to the Ringturm and the Franz-Josefs-Kai (from around 5.35 p.m. to 6.55 p.m.). The Radio Vienna traffic editors recommend detaining during this time, for example, via the Gürtel or the Zweierlinie.

On Sunday, the day of the marathon, large-scale closures will occur throughout Vienna. The city center should be avoided. It is also recommended to avoid the other districts within the Gürtel and parts of the Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau districts on the day of the marathon.

The city highways are open except for the access roads to the city center. Access to the districts affected by the marathon will be possible via the Friedensbrücke, Rossauer Brücke, Augartenbrücke, and Salztorbrücke until around 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Departure from the city center and Vienna-Alsergrund in the direction of the Südosttangente (A23) is possible via Franz-Josefs-Kai, Uraniastraße, Dampfschiffstraße, Weißgerber, and Erdberger Lände from 11.20 a.m.

Mariahilf and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus hardly accessible

Driving on the Zweierlinie is only possible in the direction of Wien-Neubau in the section between Alser Straße and Neustiftgasse (except for access to the Museumsquartier garage).

The Mariahilf district and parts of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, on the other hand, can only be reached or exited via locks to a very limited extent between 8.30 a.m. and around 1.00 p.m. (during the run via Linke Wienzeile and back via Mariahilfer Straße). Access from the Landstraße, Wieden, and Margareten districts in the direction of the city center is only possible as far as Schwarzenbergplatz, Lothringer Straße, or Karlsplatz.

Restrictions on public transport too

Public transport will also be massively affected by the marathon. A total of almost 30 streetcar and bus lines will be shortened or diverted on Sunday, including streetcar lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 18, 31, 43, 46, 52, 60, 71, D, and O as well as bus lines 4A, 10A to 14A, 40A, 48A, 57A, 77A, 92A, and 92B. All subway lines run more frequently than usual on Sundays. The rapid transit system is also a good alternative in view of the numerous road closures.
