For most of us, COVID-19 is now just an annoying cold virus, with severe cases being rare. However, an extremely effective variant is currently causing trouble.

The variant is called “Stratus” XFG, which Omicron has given particularly “favorable” genetic material. The World Health Organization (WHO) has had it on its radar as a “variant under observation” since June 25.

It is also appearing in more and more holiday destinations. In Europe, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Denmark are particularly affected. However, the WHO assesses the risk to global health as low.

These symptoms can be expected. “Stratus” is mainly associated with a runny nose, fever, and aching limbs. Hoarseness is particularly common, along with a dry cough and sore throat.

Health authorities are reassuring the public, however, as they believe that the currently approved COVID-19 vaccines also protect against severe disease progression in NB.1.8.1. It is also essential that there is a high level of basic immunization among the population. So there is no need to worry at present.

The risk group needs to take action by getting booster shots every 12 months: people over the age of 60, those with pre-existing conditions, and healthcare workers are advised to do so. The best time to get vaccinated is in the fall.
