More than 309 million people have tested positive for the virus worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. About 5.5 million infected people have died. More than 9.4 billion vaccine doses have been administered.
Even when vaccinated people contract coronavirus, hospitalization numbers show vaccination protects well against severe symptoms and severe courses.
The U.S. has 1.13 new infections in 24 hours. This is the highest number of new infections worldwide so far since the beginning of the pandemic. More than 135,500 people have had to be hospitalized. Most of the infections are attributed to the rapid spread of the omicron variant. About 1700 people die daily from and with Covid-19.
Mexican President Andres Manual Obrador has contracted Covid-19 for the second time. On Twitter, Obrador wrote Monday (Jan. 10) that he has only mild symptoms so far. He is now in quarantine. Obrador had already tested positive for the first time in January 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic, the left-wing populist had repeatedly downplayed the coronavirus and opposed restrictions. Lately, however, the president had been promoting vaccination against the virus. The 68-year-old has himself received three doses of the vaccine so far – the last in early December 2021.
According to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, annual vaccinations against the coronavirus could become necessary. High-risk patients may need even more frequent boosters, he said at a health conference Monday (Jan. 10). He told the CNBC network a few hours before the event that it still needs to be tested whether a fourth vaccination – a second booster – will be necessary initially. Pfizer is currently developing a special omicron vaccine that could be available in March, he said.
