Since 2007, Apple has regularly caused a sensation with new iPhone models – and attracts price-sensitive consumers: Those who don’t necessarily want to buy the latest model hope for lower prices on the previous year’s model. The calculation works out, to some extent, as an analysis by the retailer comparison portal geizhals.at shows.
Many Apple customers are eagerly awaiting the presentation of the new iPhone models announced for tomorrow, Tuesday. If the devices meet the expectations of the Apple fan community, they are quite willing to dig deeper into their pockets for them, the price comparison shows. If, on the other hand, there were no significant advantages over last year’s models at the previous product presentations, the prices fell in the coming months, in some cases significantly.
Between five and 31 percent
IPhone enthusiasts could save between five and 31 percent on predecessor models in the past five years. Only minor changes in equipment or design were penalized with corresponding price reductions.
While the best price for the iPhone 11 was 779 euros when it was launched in 2019, the price fell by 15 percent within a year. In return, Apple launched the iPhone 12, the group’s first 5 G model. Like its predecessor, the device had 64 GB of storage capacity. All this was available for 888 euros. The 5G network was not enough of an argument for customers: 12 months later, the device was available for 19 percent less, geizhals.at announced in a release.
iPhone 13 price stable
In addition, the iPhone 13 was a technological advance: minimum storage of 128 GB, better camera technology, and better battery life went down well with Apple fans. They were quite willing to pay 899 Euros for it. And this smartphone proved relatively stable in price: Within a year, the price fell by only 9 percent.
By contrast, the iPhone 14, launched in the previous year, had hardly any innovations. While the lowest-priced device still costs 999 euros when found, the price has since fallen by 19 percent to 807 euros.
Significant price reductions for Pro models
The Pro models, the luxury class of iPhones, also saw significant price reductions: the price of the iPhone 11 Pro fell by 19 percent within a year and by 11 percent for the successor model. However, the 13-series Pro models also proved relatively stable: The market leader’s best price of 1149 Euros was only reduced by 5 percent after one year. Apple did not manage this feat again: The latest iPhone Pro model cost 1299 Euros last year – currently around 18% cheaper.
SE model from 2022 is only minimally cheaper
The Cupertino-based company has been replenishing the low-priced SE models at longer intervals. The first model from 2016 lost a whopping 31% within two years. The second generation of the SE from 2020 was only 6 percent cheaper after two years. And with the latest SE model from 2022, customers only save around 2 percent.
