In the past 24 hours, almost 3,000 new infections have been reported in Austria. In addition, the number of deaths rose by 54 to 4,056 people who have died as a result of a Covid 19 infection since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. At 3,501, the number of newly recovered patients was higher than the 2,932 new infections. The number of patients in intensive care units was stable at a high level, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health.
The number of Covid-19 patients requiring hospital treatment fell by around nine percent last week, as did the number of intensive care patients. On Wednesday, 3,854 people needed hospital treatment, 63 fewer than on Tuesday. There were 610 patients in the intensive care units – one person more than the day before. This is around 100 fewer than the previous peak – on November 25, 709 patients in Austria needed intensive care.
On average, 3,077 new infections were reported daily last week – with 4,594 new cases recovered. Since the beginning of the pandemic there have been 311,002 positive test results throughout Austria. This means that 3.5 percent of the population has already been infected. On Wednesday there were a total of 41,131 confirmed active cases in Austria – that is about the same number as the population of the Vienna district of Alsergrund. A total of 265,815 people are considered to have recovered.
The trend in the number of deaths is still particularly negative. In the past seven days, 610 people throughout Austria have died as a result of a coronavirus infection. The average number of deaths per day was 87. The situation was even more dramatic last week, when around 101 deaths were reported every day. The seven-day incidence is currently 6.9 – which means that last week almost seven people per 100,000 inhabitants died as a result of an infection. This figure is still clearly highest in Carinthia – here the seven-day incidence of deaths is 17.3.
The southernmost province, which was long considered a positive example during the pandemic, now also reports the highest seven-day incidence of new infections at 304.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. On Wednesday, this figure was 242 throughout Austria, which means that 242 people were infected per 100,000 inhabitants last week. The 14-day incidence was 567.2, which means that the number of infected persons per 100,000 inhabitants is still almost six times higher than the value of 100, which, according to the guidelines of the federal government, is the limit for people entering Austria from abroad without quarantine from December 19.
20,351 test results were reported in the past 24 hours – 14.4 percent of which were positive. An average of 21,816 SARS-CoV-2 smears were added daily in the past week, the positive rate was 14.1 percent on average – the highest rate of 30.8 was in Carinthia. However, the number of daily tests was already well over 30,000.
Most new infections have been reported since Tuesday with 546 from Vienna, almost the same number were reported in Upper Austria with 544. Lower Austria reported 519 new cases, Styria 443 and Carinthia 291. 201 SARS-CoV-2 infected persons were added in Salzburg in the last 24 hours, 166 in Tyrol, 118 in Burgenland and Vorarlberg reported 104 new infections.
