More and more Austrians want to be vaccinated. This is shown by the latest data from the Chancellery and the Ministry of Health.

Last year, only one-third of the population aged 16 and older was willing to protect themselves with a shot against Corona. Since then, the proportion has risen extremely steeply. Currently, it is already more than 70%. Of those over 65, 76% already want to be protected.

Second big rush
The second big rush to vaccinate is just getting underway. On Monday, the EU also released the Biontech-Pfizer vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds. There are 340,000 youngsters in that group nationwide. Experts say about 200,000 of them will get protected.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein: “As planned, five million people can be vaccinated by the end of June, which corresponds to two-thirds of the population aged 16 and over. The increasing willingness to be vaccinated is very gratifying.” An extrapolation of the new demand shows that 500,000 more people now also want to receive the vaccination. That brings the total to 5.5 million Austrians.

Vaccination schedule delayed
However, the strong increase in those willing to be vaccinated also means that the chancellor’s earlier promise that all Austrians willing to be vaccinated should receive an initial vaccination by the end of June is no longer realistic . Only Lower Austria and Salzburg will make it. “There is sufficient vaccine available for those to be additionally vaccinated in July. Everyone who wants to will receive a vaccination,” Mückstein and Kurz said yesterday.
So far, 1.54 million people in Austria are fully protected against Corona.
