The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning against carelessness in Europe in light of the Delta variant. Currently, there are already many large sporting events and gatherings, while many people still do not have full vaccination protection, Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s lead CoV expert, said yesterday. “These events will have consequences,” she said in Geneva. Already, she said, transmissions have occurred because of it.
Van Kerkhove did not comment on specific events, such as the European soccer championships. Dozens of CoV infections have already been detected in connection with matches in Copenhagen and St. Petersburg, including some with the delta variant, according to authorities and media.
Tread carefully with new freedoms
“The delta variant is a dangerous virus,” Van Kerkhove said, referring to the higher risk of infection. While health measures, vaccinations and treatments work well against Delta, after further mutations a point could be reached where all these measures are no longer sufficient, the epidemiologist warned.
Despite falling infection rates and falling restrictions, people in Europe should be careful with their new freedoms: “There are a lot of things we all want to do, but there aren’t a lot of things we actually have to do.”
