Corona numbers in Austria are on the rise. How sharply, however, is surprising. New report predicts that this might exceed the 2,000 mark soon.

1,602 newly registered Corona cases report the authorities on Friday, a new high in the current phase of the Corona pandemic. That the numbers will continue to rise was already predicted by the Corona Prognosis Consortium report. How much, however, is entirely new. Whereas previously there was talk of around 1,700 new infections, the outlook has now darkened dramatically. There is expected to be a further explosion in the coming days and over the weekend.

Current forecasts are for an infection incidence of up to 2,000 Corona cases per day as early as September 1. On the last forecast day, September 1, a 7-day incidence of 136 cases per 100,000 population is expected. By comparison, Austria’s current incidence is still just below 100. The range of 7-day incidence on the last forecast day in the forecast is from 69 in Burgenland to 193 in Vienna.

There is to be a huge increase, namely a doubling, in the hospitalization figures. Currently, 420 people are undergoing hospital treatment due to the Corona virus. Of these, 104 are being cared for in intensive care units. As of September 8, there should already be 180 intensive care patients with severe corona and 626 corona patients in the normal wards of domestic hospitals.

Meanwhile, vaccination numbers are declining. 5,473,749 people, or 61.28 percent of the vaccine-eligible population aged 12 and older, have received at least one Corona vaccination to date, of whom 5,169,410 people (57.87%) have full vaccination protection. However, on average, Corona vaccination is now administered only every 5.5 seconds in Austria. Just a few weeks ago, this figure was at or even below one second.
