U.S. intelligence agencies remain unable to resolve differences over the exact origin of the COVID-19 virus. The debate over whether an incident in a Chinese lab may have played a role must therefore remain unresolved, officials said Friday (Aug. 27) in a released summary. However, according to individual voices in the U.S. intelligence community, it is said to be certain, according to the Reuters news agency, that the coronavirus was not designed as a biological weapon, but most likely a small group of people in Wuhan were exposed to the virus, from where it eventually spread around the globe. U.S. President Joe Biden said, according to Reuters, that the U.S. will continue to work with the entire world to get China to cooperate with the WHO.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro will in the future require proof of vaccination against the coronavirus to visit public facilities such as gyms, cinemas and museums. This is according to a decree published by Rio’s city government on Friday (Aug. 27). The measure will apply from September 1. More than 80 percent of the adult population in Rio have received the first dose, according to the city government. Previously, São Paulo had announced a vaccination passport. This was to apply from Friday, but now the introduction has been postponed.
