Every year, Apple publishes its list of the most popular apps of the year. However, popularity is not to be equated with user ratings, but with the number of downloads. Unsurprisingly, pandemic dominates the apps charts in Austria. In first place among the free apps for the iPhone was the “Grüner Pass” app, while on the iPad Zoom dusted off first place.

The unattractive cell phone signature, which is required for various online official procedures, but also for logging in to the electronic vaccination certificate, also managed a top ranking in sixth place. It is also exciting that the alternative messenger Signal came in third after Whatsapp and thus ahead of Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps and Tiktok.

The top ten free apps on the iPad read more like Microsoft’s “best of” and suggest that the tablet is actually used for work as well as entertainment in the home office. Behind Zoom is Microsoft’s chat software Teams, which is used in many companies. The former competitor is strongly represented in the top ten with Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Straming platforms like Netflix, Youtube, Amazon and, surprisingly, Disney+ make up the rest.

Paid apps and games
When it comes to apps that require payment, first place on the iPhone belongs to the messenger service Threema. This is followed by the augmented reality app Peakfinder, which can be used to determine mountain peaks from anywhere in the world. The poductivity app Forest came in third. Goodnotes 5, Procreate and Notability, apps for note-taking, drawing and painting, also topped the annual charts.

The games category is dominated by familiar titles. “Among Us!” and “Minecraft” are the most popular free and paid titles on both the iPhone and iPad. Other games in the top ten include “Bloons TD 6,” “Project Makeover,” “Roblox” and “Monopoly.” Pandemic content is also not to be missed. For example, the simulation “Plague”, which has been available for several years and in which you have to fight against the global spread of diseases and viruses, has made it to the third place of the paid iPhone games.
