Starting in July, Corona will be treated legally like all non-notifiable infectious diseases.

According to a government, bill passed Tuesday in the Health Committee with a majority of votes from the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Green Party, Covid-19 will thus be transferred from the pandemic system to the regular system, parliamentary correspondents reported.

Test costs will only be borne by people with symptoms.
As a result, as of July 1, health insurance will only cover the testing costs for people with symptoms. However, it said a general testing infrastructure will continue to be ensured. Similarly, the bill addresses infrastructure for vaccinations. Provisions for Covid 19 drugs are to be primarily maintained. It also plans to continue surveillance programs, it said.

Starting in July: corona becomes a non-notifiable infectious disease
The change is justified by the higher elemental immunity and the mild disease courses caused by the prevailing virus variants and the consequently lower risk for health and the health system.

Numerous regulations enacted during the Corona pandemic are to be revised and partially repealed as part of the legislative initiative. In addition to placing the disease on an equal legal footing with other non-notifiable infectious diseases, the legislation also establishes new testing, vaccination, and medication regulations. Two million free vaccinations will be made possible for the 2023/2024 vaccination season.
