The World Health Organization (WHO) Europe office warns against taking the Corona pandemic lightly. Covid-19, while no longer defined as an international health emergency since early May, still has significant health implications globally, WHO Europe said.

It said the virus will likely accompany humanity for years, if not forever. He said there is also a genuine risk of new virus variants. “While the international health emergency may be over, the pandemic certainly is not,” WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge stressed.

WHO Europe believes it is time to implement lessons learned and better equip health systems for future shocks. To that end, it now launched a transition plan to provide the Region with the necessary capabilities and networks to identify, verify and report new health threats rapidly. The Copenhagen-based health experts urged that member states must invest strategically and sustainably in pandemic preparedness while remaining vigilant for new threats.

More than 270 million people have contracted the coronavirus in the 53 European and Central Asian countries included in the WHO European Region, according to the organization. More than 2.2 million people have died from it since January 2020, according to the report. Even though the numbers of hospital admissions and deaths have dropped sharply thanks to the population’s increased immunity, the still widespread prevalence means that thousands of vulnerable people die every week, it said.
