As in 2018, 2019 and 2022, Vienna once again leads the “Economist” ranking of the ten most livable cities in the world.
Vienna scored again in 2023 with high safety, good public facilities and a rich cultural offering. Copenhagen, Melbourne and Sydney follow in the following places.

Cities in Asia and the Middle East catch up in the rankings
Western European cities, including Stockholm, Rotterdam and London, fell significantly compared to 2022. Their ratings did not deteriorate seriously, but cities in Asia and the Middle East caught up. The report said some Asian metropolises benefited from the region’s recovery from the pandemic. It also pointed to strikes and violent protests in Western Europe, which have recently become more common.

No German city represented in the top ten
The Canadian city of Vancouver landed in fifth place. Zurich, ranked third last year, slipped to sixth. No German city is in the top ten, with Frankfurt and Berlin sharing 17th place.

Paris landed in 24th place. According to the studies’ authors, the massive demonstrations against pension reform affected the rating of the French capital, which had ranked 19th last year. By comparison, London is ranked 46th this year, and New York 69th. According to the analysis, Damascus, Tripoli, Lagos and Kyiv are currently among the ten least attractive cities in the world.

The most livable city in 2023 is once again Vienna
Thirty criteria were assessed in five categories: stability, healthcare, education, culture and environment, and infrastructure. Vienna did well in all of them. The only shortcoming seen was the lack of major sporting events.
