Mini-depression on Monday

Autumn has been like a doctor who says, You don’t need an artificial knee yet. It’s easy to think I’ll never get to the alley with the artificial knee. But anyone caught out by the fog on the way to work today can say to themselves, Now I know what the blues are again, but at least it’s not Monday because Monday felt even worse. A considerable proportion of the population suffers from a mini-depression on Mondays. There’s even a medical name for it: “Monday neurosis.”

It could just be a lack of sleep. People sleep worse than average on Monday nights, say sleep researchers. They toss and turn in bed with anxiety fantasies. There are probably also fantasies of quitting and murder. It would be understandable, but sleep researchers warn us not to get drunk on Sunday evenings with a grumpy boss or impatient customers. This is because alcohol keeps you awake at night, though the melatonin in your pineal gland is constantly sending the opposite signals. No wonder you get depressed when the hormones in your head are fighting, just like the bosses later at the Monday morning meeting. And if melatonin does prevail around four o’clock in the morning, there is a 70 percent chance that you will have a bad dream. Sleep researchers contend that the brain behaves like a naughty child at night, dancing around on the tables because the parents are away. You must ensure you wake up in time for the Monday morning meeting, because otherwise, your fantasies become reality faster than you can get them off the table.
