Many people know the problem: some of the food is left over after cooking, or you don’t eat everything you’ve bought. Food usually doesn’t last long enough in the fridge. If you don’t want to waste food and throw it away, you turn to the freezer. Food can be frozen in the freezer and then defrosted and enjoyed later.
However, you shouldn’t do this for all foods, as some are not suitable for the freezer:

  1. Water-rich fruit and vegetables
Fresh fruit and vegetables do not last very long. However, not all types should be frozen, particularly fruit and vegetables containing water, which can become mushy and lose consistency after defrosting. Tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, lettuce, grapes, and apples are all affected.
  2. Raw eggs
Eggs are another type of food with a short shelf life. However, you should never put them in the freezer, which could be messy. If raw eggs with shells are frozen, the liquid expands and causes the shells to burst.
  3. Garlic
It is also better not to freeze garlic. It loses flavor when stored in the freezer. The same also applies if you store garlic in the fridge for longer.
  1. Yoghurt, cream cheese, and curd cheese
Care should be taken with dairy products with a high-fat content. If you freeze yoghurt, you can only eat it as ice cream afterwards. Cream and curd cheese are also unsuitable for the freezer, as they become inedible after defrosting.
  2. Parmesan
Hard cheeses like Parmesan should not be put in the freezer either. It becomes crumbly and loses its taste when frozen.
  3. Raw potatoes
Potatoes should not be frozen, at least not when raw, as they become sweet. This is because their starch converts to sugar at low temperatures. In addition to the taste, the consistency changes, and the potatoes become mushy.
  4. Dishes containing gelatine
Desserts containing gelatine should not be placed in the freezer. Puddings, creams, etc., lose their binding power and become runny due to the low temperatures.
