In mid-September, Apple presents its latest iPhone generation, including the new iOS operating system. The iPhone 15 is expected to bring many innovations and changes.
We have summarized all rumours and leaked information for you from new materials, controls, camera changes, and ports and partly a new front design.

iPhone 15 (Pro): The display size
There should not be too many changes in size, dimensions and weight. The smaller iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a 6.1-inch display, while the larger iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will have a 6.7-inch screen.
There are also said to be no other fundamental design changes or innovations to the appearance. By the way, there will be no return of the iPhone Mini. The last of its kind was the iPhone 13 Mini, which is still available for under 600 Euros on Amazon.
Lightning adé, hello USB-C
For iPhone users, the switch from Lightning to USB-C will probably lead to the most excellent convenience in a long time. On the one hand, almost all Apple devices—Macbooks, iPads, and iPhones—can now be charged and connected via USB-C. (AirPods Pro and Apple Watch can charge without a cable.)
On the other hand, iPhone users can now borrow a cable from Android users to charge their batteries. The change to USB-C also increases the theoretical data transfer speed and the maximum charging power. However, Fast Charging and high data transfer rates are only possible with MFi-certified Apple accessories. The included USB-C cable should only support USB 2.0 speeds, at least in some models.
The maximum charging power of the iPhone 15 Pro via USB-C cable is 35 watts. It will probably be lower for the regular iPhone 15.
Apple will adopt the new Qi2 standard for wireless charging in all iPhone 15 models. Thus, you will also get a wireless charging power of up to 15 watts with non-MagSafe chargers in the future.
iPhone 15: Non-Pro vs. Pro
Regarding the distinction between Pro and non-Pro, Apple will rely on its tried-and-true strategy for the upcoming iPhones: Pro models will get the latest features and equipment.
The non-Pro models will primarily be equipped with those features and hardware that the Pro models already received last year.
iPhone 15 (Pro): Display
First and foremost, this means that all iPhones – including the non-Pro models – will be equipped with Dynamic Island this year. The thick bar notch is thus history once and for all.
Nevertheless, the non-Pro models must make do with a 60 Hz display. The Always-On features, and the ProMotion technology with 120 Hz will be reserved for the Pro models.
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will still feature an OLED screen with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. There are not supposed to be any significant innovations here.
iPhone 15: Innovations in the camera
Last year, the Pro models received a 48 M.P. primary camera. This year, it is now the standard devices’ turn: Instead of the 12 M.P. lens, the two non-Pro iPhones also get a 48 M.P. camera.
A few changes accompany this. For example, it reduces the aperture from f/1.5 to f/1.79, as is already the case in the 14 Pro models.
However, a new sensor that relies on a stacked architecture is supposed to increase the light sensitivity significantly. This would enable better results in poor ambient light.
iPhone 15 Pro: Innovations in the camera
Compared to the standard devices, the Pro models are supposed to get an even bigger stacked sensor from Sony that can capture even more light. According to rumours, the new image sensor will lead to noticeable improvements in all situations and modes.
Beyond that, hardly any innovations are expected for the camera in the iPhone 15 Pro. The 48 MP and the aperture will be kept, and there will be no significant changes to the wide-angle camera and the telephoto lens. Only the Pro Max model is expected to get the Periscope Zoom.
iPhone 15 Pro Max: Lens with Periscope zoom
Since the Periscope lens requires more space, it is assumed that only the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max will receive these innovations. This is supposed to increase the magnification factor and improve the quality of zoom shots.
How high the zoom factor will ultimately be on the Pro Max is unclear. A 6x optical magnification is considered likely. The 14 Pro models still have a 3x optical zoom.
iPhone 15 (Pro): The processor
The standard models are expected to be equipped with the A16 chip from last year. The Pro models will rely on the latest A17 processor. For all new iPhone models, this means increased performance and better energy efficiency.
The A17 chips are based on a 3-nanometer architecture. They are said to have a 10 to 15 percent performance increase compared to the A16 processors. Energy consumption is said to be up to 30 percent lower.
iPhone 15 (Pro): Details about the A17 chip
Details about the new CPU have also been leaked. According to this, the A17 Bionic is supposed to consist of six CPU cores and 6 GPU cores. One more GPU core than the A16 Bionic used in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which are expected to get the A16 Bionic this year, thus have one less GPU core than this year’s Pro devices. The A17 Bionic is said to have a clock speed of 3.7 GHz. That is slightly more than the A16 chip, which reaches 3.46 GHz.
iPhone 15 (Pro): Modem and WiFi
The iPhones are supposed to get an in-house Apple modem in 2024 at the earliest. In this respect, Apple will again install a 5G modem from Qualcomm this year. Compared to last year, the X70 modem is supposed to improve in all aspects.
The non-Pro models will continue to use WiFi 6. The Pro and Pro Max should also be able to connect via WiFi 6E.
iPhone 15: Without a SIM card slot?
In the U.S., all new iPhone models will be launched without a physical slot for a SIM card, so iPhone users in the U.S. will have to use an eSIM.
This may also be the case in Europe with the iPhone 15. According to rumours, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the U.K. will not have a SIM card slot.
Whether the new iPhone models will also only work with eSIM in Austria remains to be seen.
iPhone 15 Pro: New case, new material
The two new Pro models are said to have a titanium frame instead of a stainless steel casing. This will make Apple phones more resistant and lighter. The edges are displayed as being slightly bevelled.
At the same time, the frame enclosing the display panel is narrower on the two Pro models: from 2.17 millimetres on the iPhone 14 Pro to 1.55 millimetres on the iPhone 15 Pro.
The non-Pro models will neither get a titanium frame nor a thinner structure, including bevelled edges.
iPhone 15 Pro: New colours
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are said to be available in two new colours: titanium grey and dark blue. They are to replace the gold and dark purple hues.
iPhone Pro: New controls
Most iPhone users swear by the physical “ring/mute” button, which has existed since the first iPhone. The omission of popular control is, therefore, all the more controversial. The fact that a virtual action button will replace the physical switch in this year’s Pro models is considered as good as fixed.
For iPhone users to get used to the new button, it is supposed to enable a whole range of new functions. The action button is supposed to serve as a shortcut for apps, features and settings that are used frequently. In the iOS 17 code, we found hints of the following possibilities:
Accessibility, like VoiceOver or magnifier.
Shortcuts for actions like writing messages or playing a playlist
Activate silent mode (i.e. like the “ring/mute” button)
Activate camera
Activate flashlight
Activate focus mode
Call translator
Create voice notes
When will the iPhone 15 and the new iOS 17 arrive?
Traditionally, Apple introduced its new iPhones in September. This will not change this year. September 12 is the most likely date to present the latest devices. The sales start would then be September 22.
Around the same time, Apple is expected to make the new iOS 17 operating system available for all compatible devices. The new iPhone 15 models already ship with iOS 17.
The iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 from 2017 will not receive the update to iOS 17. All newer Apple phones will be able to install the new operating system.
What is the price of the iPhone 15 (Pro)?
If the rumours are true, there should be a significant price increase – or, more precisely, much higher price differences between the individual models.
Allegedly, Apple wants to keep the same entry-level price for the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus. In Austria, that would be 999 Euros (RRP) and 1,149 Euros (MSRP). The iPhone 14 is available on Amazon from 836 Euros, and the iPhone 14 Plus from 994 Euros.
In contrast, the prices for the Pro models are supposed to increase comparatively strongly, and Apple hopes to increase the sales of the standard devices. The iPhone 14 Pro is currently available on Amazon for 1,118 Euros, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max for 1,249 Euros.
To conceal the price increase, Apple could raise the minimum storage size of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to 256 GB – the most significant possible storage is supposed to be 2 T.B.
It is also conceivable that the Pro Max model will see the most significant price jump. The Periscope camera could be responsible for that. How high the prices of the Pro models remain to be seen.
