25 and 50 Euro vouchers for all Viennese households for coffee house or pub; Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig presented the action with city councilor Hanke and WKW boss Ruck and vice president Arsenovic
After two months of Corona lockdown, the gastronomy is opening up again on Friday, May 15th. In order to boost the new start of coffee houses, pubs and restaurants, the City of Vienna is issuing all Viennese households with gastronomy vouchers worth 25 or 50 euros – depending on the size of the household. The campaign was presented ton Wednesday, 13. May 2020 by Mayor Michael Ludwig together with the President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry Walter Ruck, City Councillor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke and Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hans Arsenovic. This happened at the traditional – but this year significantly delayed and merely symbolic – opening of the Schanigarten season in front of a traditional restaurant at the Albertina in Vienna’s city centre.
Coffee house, Beisl and Schanigarten in the summer are not only part of the city’s lifestyle, but also economically important for Vienna: “Our much praised Viennese gastronomy scene comprises 6,500 businesses, which in turn secure around 60,000 jobs in Vienna and generate a turnover of 1.4 billion euros”, said Ludwig. The gastronomy is particularly affected by the Corona crisis – directly by the “lock-down”, in the long term also by the absence of tourists. “The voucher campaign shows that we are fighting for every business and for every job,” said Ludwig.
“Visit the restaurants, redeem the voucher and thus help the cultural asset gastronomy through the crisis”, appealed the head of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, Walter Ruck. Ruck sees the voucher campaign as a “welcome stimulus” for a “restart of the businesses shaken by the crisis”.
The campaign is also a signo f gratitude peaceful and “genuine Viennese serenity” that the city’s residents displayed during the Corona crisis and the restrictions in everyday life that came with it, Ludwig stressed.
The “Vienna Gastro Voucher” campaign runs from June to September. 950,000 Viennese households will receive a voucher by mail, which they can redeem at a participating establishment. One-person households will receive a 25 euro voucher, households with more people a voucher worth 50 euros.
“As a city we are providing 40 million euros for this campaign. This is worth the support of the Viennese gastronomy sector”, said City Councillor of Finance Peter Hanke. According to Ludwig and Hanke, the voucher campaign should be seen as a supplement to the support offer for the gastronomy announced by the federal government. It is important to take measures in addition to the offers of the federal government that also have a short-term effect, said Vienna Chamber of Commerce Vice-President Arsenovic. “Every measure that leads to people now accepting the offers of the gastronomy sector is great and helps the gastronomy management directly at the start”.
