Whole Austria is considered by the European Union health agency ECDC on the map to the infection situation in the European Union with the highest warning stage. ECDC had published on Thursday for the first time a map of Europe, on which regions are marked green, orange or red depending upon infection situation. Yesterday, Austria and Germany appeared grey at first because no data on the number of coronavirus tests carried out were available.
A majority of the EU states had agreed on the traffic light map last Tuesday. On the one hand, EU citizens should be able to inform themselves on the Internet about the CoV situation in Europe, on the other hand it should serve to coordinate travel restrictions. Austria abstained from the agreement, among other things because of a lack of differentiation. In fact, most EU countries currently appear red on the traffic light map. Individual regions such as parts of Norway and Finland, Greece, southern Italy and Germany are classified as “green”.
Recommendation not binding
According to the recommendation of the EU Council, green areas with few infections should no longer be subject to entry bans in future. However, common standards for travelers from more affected – i.e. orange or red marked – regions are not planned. There are also no uniform criteria for quarantine and testing obligations. The recommendation is also not binding.
The basis of the main map is the number of newly reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days – the 14-day incidence – plus the rate of positive tests and the number of tests performed per 100,000 inhabitants. ECDC says it will update the graphs every Thursday based on national data.
