The day after the traffic light with 21 new, red regions was switched on Friday, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) warned to be careful during the autumn vacations: “If you can do anything, stay at home. Meanwhile 27 percent of the people in Austria live in one of the 25 regions with a red light, but this is “no reason to panic”, he said, as intensive care bed occupancy is not yet an issue and a lockdown can be prevented. On Friday 2,571 new infections were reported.

“This is exactly where we do not want to go in Austria”, said Anschober in view of partial lockdowns in Slovenia, Italy, Slovakia and a real Czech Republic since Thursday. The numbers are serious in this country, too, but one still has all chances. “The parameter is of course still the situation in the intensive care areas,” he said, because this is also the legal regulation for the lockdown in Austria.

The total capacity is around 2,000 intensive care beds; on October 15, six percent of the beds were occupied, a week later the figure was eight percent, a “manageable increase” for Anschober. The 14-day forecast of Gesundheit Österreich (GÖG) for November 4 sees an occupancy rate of twelve percent – so there is still plenty of room for improvement. However, the minister warned against “important dates”, the autumn vacations: “If there is any way you can, stay at home”, he appealed – especially with regard to Halloween. “That’s when things often go wrong,” Anschober noted, and this year there is no room for more cases of this happening due to specific celebrations with a promillegehalt.

2,571 new corona infections were reported in Austria within 24 hours as of Friday, 9.30 a.m. This means that there are currently 18,266 actively infected persons nationwide. So far, there have been 74,415 positive test results in Austria. 954 persons have died with or from SARS-CoV-2, 55,195 have recovered. On Friday, 1,058 people were undergoing hospital treatment for Covid-19, 158 of them in intensive care units.

The effective reproduction rate for SARS-CoV-2 in Austria rose again compared to the previous week and is now 1.23. The estimated daily rate of increase has almost doubled from 3.5 to 6.2 percent. The two figures are derived from laboratory diagnostic data for the period from 13 days up to and including October 21 and are based on 18,970 SARS-CoV-2 cases during this period.

In the course of time, the spread and thus the systemic risk of the virus SARS-CoV-2 has already developed towards an increased risk, according to the online page on the Corona traffic light: On September 3, the percentage of the population in regions with a certain risk assessment was 72 percent at low risk (green) and 28 percent at medium risk (yellow). On October 22nd, however, only one percent of the Austrian population lived in low risk regions (green), eleven percent in medium risk regions (yellow), 61 percent in high risk regions (orange) and 27 percent in very high risk regions.
