This year’s national holiday does not take place at Vienna’s Heldenplatz, as usual, but in the living rooms of the Austrians. Both the traditional performance show of the Austrian Armed Forces and guided tours of the Hofburg, the Parliament and the Ministries will only take place online or will be cancelled. Only the wreath-laying ceremonies and the recruiting ceremony will take place at Heldenplatz as usual, but without an audience and with a minimal cast.
The political celebrations will begin with a meeting of the Council of Ministers at 9.10 a.m. in the Federal Chancellery, followed by the laying of a wreath at 9.30 a.m. by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen at the Outer Castle Gate, followed at 10 a.m. by the laying of the wreath by the Federal Government.
At 10.30 a.m. twelve recruits are symbolically praised at Heldenplatz. In the course of the ceremony there will be speeches by the AustrianPresident Alexander Van der Bellen, Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (both ÖVP). Before the inauguration, seven German Army jets, including three Eurofighters, will fly over Heldenplatz.
As usual, even without a large audience on site, the ceremony will conclude with a parachute jump by fighter commandos. The events will be broadcast live on television. In the evening, the traditional TV address by the head of state is on the program.
