According to a report, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises against the use of the once promising drug Remdesivir for covid-19 diseases. After careful consideration, a WHO panel of experts concluded that the drug “has no significant impact on mortality or other important effects on patients, such as the need for artificial respiration or the time to recovery,” wrote the British Medical Journal.
The article, which was published on Friday, also stated that it was not excluded that the drug could also cause harm. And then there are the costs. Remdesivir was originally developed by the US pharmaceutical company Gilead to combat the Ebola virus. After the outbreak of the pandemic, it was for a while considered a beacon of hope in the fight against Covid-19, and in July it became the first drug ever to be approved in Europe for the specific treatment of certain patients. Recent tests have suggested that the drug’s benefit is minimal at best. The findings were the result of a study coordinated by the WHO involving thousands of patients in almost 500 clinics in more than 30 countries.
