According to media reports, the Austrian government plans to introduce strict entry restrictions for the Christmas holidays. All those entering Austria from countries with a 7-day incidence of more than 100 (per 100,000 inhabitants) will have to spend ten days in quarantine. Corresponding reports have been confirmed to the APA from circles of officials. All neighboring countries would be affected. The measure is to come into force before Christmas and is to last at least until 10 January.

Those affected should be able to leave quarantine after five days at the earliest. Exactly when the measure will come into force is still unclear. According to the “Kronen Zeitung” there will be strict entry controls at the borders and airports.

Measure to prevent third wave
The measure aims particularly at “Heimaturlauberinnen” and – holiday-makers, who travel from Austria into the current risk areas on the Balkans or into Turkey. The long duration of the measure is justified with the orthodox Christmas celebration on 7 January. The measure is to serve for the prevention of a third infection wave and/or the collapse of the health system.

Also the quarantine period for vacation returnees from Coronavirus areas at the work place is not to be considered as excuse, reported the “Kurier”. The newspaper referred in this connection to data of the Ministry of the Interior, according to which Turkey had registered more than 31,000 new infections on November 30 and Serbia more than 6,000; the 7-day incidence in Serbia was last at 711.
