The British health authorities have granted emergency approval for the coronavirus vaccine of the German pharmaceutical company Biontech and its U.S. partner Pfizer. This was announced by both companies. This means that approval was granted there more quickly than in the EU and the USA.

The vaccine will be available from next week, the Ministry of Health announced today in London. Biontech and Pfizer declared that the approval is “a groundbreaking scientific milestone”.

According to the companies, vaccine doses could be delivered immediately – and Great Britain wants to start vaccinations at the beginning of next week. Health Minister Matt Hancock announced this in an interview with Sky News. The distribution will then take place in accordance with the recommendations of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI). Priority will be given to certain population groups.

According to the companies, extensive testing of the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine has shown it to be effective in providing 95 percent protection against Covid-19 disease. The vaccine works similarly well across all age groups and other demographic differences and has virtually no serious side effects, the companies reported after completion of the latest analyses. The vaccination protection in people over 65 years of age is over 94 percent.

These positive results relate to protection against Covid 19 disease. To what extent the vaccine also protects against infection and possible transmission of the virus is not yet clear.

The European Medicines Agency Ema also intends to decide on a recommendation for approval of the corona vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer in December. The agency announced on Tuesday that the results of the review should be available by 29 December at the latest.
