The Vienna Christmas Market is cancelled this year. The other Christmas markets in Vienna also have to dismantle their stands. This is the result of the corona measures announced by the federal government on Wednesday.
On approximately 20 larger Christmas markets in Vienna must be dismantled now, among them also the famous Christkindlmarkt at the city hall place.
“Of course we are incredibly sad, because we still have a small spark of hope. On the other hand, we fully understand that due to this pandemic, extreme measures have to be taken and hard cuts have to be made,” said the spokesman for the Christmas Market, Johannes Vetter. On Thursday, the dismantling of the half-finished huts and stalls will begin. The dismantling is to be completed by Monday.
Compensation analogous to the catering trade
For many Christkindl operators this means a big loss of the main business that concentrates on the six to eight weeks in the pre-Christmas period. In addition, they have already bought goods, but now they are left with gingerbread, cookies, baked potatoes and other perishable goods. According to the Chamber of Commerce, the stallholders are compensated in the same way as the restaurateurs. This means that they will be reimbursed 80 percent of the previous year’s turnover until December 7, half of it from December 7 and the fixed costs from January.
