Health authorities in Germany reported 23,449 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours. This figure is slightly above the 22,806 cases of the previous week, according to the RKI figures from Friday morning. With 432 new deaths within one day, the third highest level since the beginning of the pandemic was reported. The previous peak of 487 deaths was reached on Wednesday.
The number of daily deaths had recently been on the rise, which was expected after the steep increase in new infections. The total number of people who died from or as a result of a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 18,034 on Friday. The RKI counts 1,130,238 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. According to estimates, around 820,600 people have now recovered.
According to the RKI management report of Thursday, the so-called seven-day R-value was 0.94 (previous day: 0.89). That means that 100 infected persons will mathematically infect 94 more people. In each case, the value reflects the infection event 8 to 16 days ago. If the value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection subsides.
