Russia has started large-scale vaccinations against the coronavirus in its capital Moscow. The vaccine “Sputnik V” developed by Russian scientists was administered to more than 25,000 volunteers in a total of 70 clinics over the weekend.
The state media celebrated the start of the vaccination campaign and compared it with the Soviet Union’s advance into space. One of the headlines was: “The launch of the Sputnik! The “Sputnik” was the first artificial earth satellite in the cosmos in 1957.
Mayor: 25,000 vaccinated so far
This makes Russia one of the first countries in the world to vaccinate its population against the lung disease Covid-19 on a large scale. The vaccine was initially given to employees in the education, health and social services sectors.
In Europe’s largest city with officially twelve million inhabitants, thousands had made an appointment for the launch yesterday. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that 25,000 people had been vaccinated so far this afternoon. A total of up to seven million people are to be vaccinated in Moscow.
