From the United Arab Emirates there is a message about the effectiveness of another corona vaccination. The vaccine from the Chinese company Sinopharm is currently being tested there in a Phase 3 trial. And now there are first interim figures: According to these, the vaccine is 86 percent effective. In the first report, which is distributed by the Reuters agency with reference to the UAE Ministry of Health, there is talk of “effectiveness against infection”. Whether this actually means that the vaccination prevents infection in 86 percent of cases (instead of, as in most previous attempts, an outbreak of disease) is uncertain, however. Similar reports had used sloppy wording in the past and in reality meant protection against the disease Covid-19.
Sinopharm has used an inactivated form of the Sars-CoV-2 virus for its vaccination. This is now the third method of anti-corona vaccination to show efficacy, in addition to the two mRNA vaccines from Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna, the Adenovirus-based vaccines from Astra-Zeneca and the Russian Sputnik vaccine. The serum has already been approved for use in infrastructure-critical professional groups in the UAE and China.
