EU could approve vaccine earlier than planned. A good 9 months after the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, approval in the EU is imminent.
The Corona vaccine from Pfizer and Biontech could also be approved in the EU before Christmas. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) wants to clear the way for this. Already on 21 December it will present its appraisal over the permission of the vaccine of the Pharmaunternehmenes from the USA and Mainz, announced the authority on Tuesday in Amsterdam.

That is eight days earlier than planned. It is considered almost certain that the EMA will give the green light. Formally, the EU Commission still has to give its approval. This is considered a formality and could take place within a day. This would clear the way for mass vaccination in all EU member states.

Vaccine must meet high standards
No compromises would be made on safety standards, the EMA stressed. “A marketing authorization ensures that Covid 19 vaccines meet the same high EU standards that apply to all vaccines and medicines.”

German Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) is counting on an early start of vaccinations against the coronavirus. He said he is optimistic that the vaccine will be approved on Dec. 23. This is “good news for the European Union,” he said. The goal, he said, is to start vaccination in Germany before the turn of the year.
Already approved in Canada, UK and US
While the vaccine is already on the market in the UK, the US and Canada with emergency approval, the EU is still waiting for the green light from the EMA. The authority has already been reviewing the clinical and scientific data of the manufacturers for weeks in the so-called rolling review process.

“We are working around the clock for the approval of the first Covid 19 vaccine,” said EMA Director Emer Cooke. Initially, the EMA had said the process would be completed no later than Dec. 29. But that is now being brought forward by eight days.
