The number of new Corona infections in Austria has dropped slightly: 2063 cases were recorded in the past 24, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) said at a press conference Friday. 2314 infected people have recovered; 2371 patients are being treated in hospitals, 371 of them in intensive care units.
On Thursday, 2354 had been in hospital and 373 in intensive care beds. The number of deaths continues to be high: Within the past 24 hours, 73 people who died from or with Covid-19 were reported.
“The infection figures must continue to come down,” Anschober stressed. Starting next week, a gradual reduction can be expected, he said. Herwig Ostermann, managing director of Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, expects an average of 2,000 new infections by the middle of next week, with a slight downward trend. With the intensive care patients he expects a stabilization with approximately 300.
It is now necessary to make the best possible use of the “final sprint in the lockdown”: “It’s up to all of us,” the health minister appealed to the population. “It is the declared goal of the federal government that this lockdown ends on the date we have announced” – forecasts, however, are difficult. In any case, it is not possible to go into lockdown forever; for Anschober, it is “the ultimate method.” A transition to other measures must be found, he said, and the government is working on that: “In the course of the next week, we will present the results.”
