280,000 of 1.7 million affected people have already received mail and masks from the government. The campaign should be completed by the end of January
Vienna – The announcement was made a long time ago: the government wanted to send free FFP2 masks to all people over the age of 65 living in Austria. Each person is to receive ten pieces, they will be delivered by mail. The idea is that older people will be better prepared for the Corona pandemic. Some masks have already been delivered throughout Austria, but the vast majority will have to wait.
The delivery of the masks was announced for mid-January. First envelopes were already dispatched on 23 December and delivered on 24 December. Until really all concerning are supplied, it will last however still up to the third January week, according to a released information from the Ministry of Health.
Altogether 1.7 million persons at the age of over 65 years are to be provided with the masks. The FFP2 masks offer significantly better protection than the simple mouth-nose protection, which primarily serves to protect other people. In the future, FFP2 masks could also be mandatory at certain events.
The ÖVP and the Greens put the cost of the campaign at 24 million euros.
The slow start to the distribution of the masks has caused irritation. By Thursday, 280,000 people had received their masks.
