Ex-President Trump was treated with an antibody cocktail from the US company Regeneron during his Corona illness. Now Germany has secured 200,000 doses.
Donald Trump called it a “miracle” and a “cure.” In no time, he promised, he would make it available to the whole world.
The talk is of a Corona drug called Regeneron.
After the ex-president contracted the corona virus in October, he was treated – among other things – with Regeneron’s antibody cocktail and recovered comparatively quickly.
Now Germany has secured 200,000 doses of the new Corona drug. “Starting next week, Germany will be the first country in the EU to use the monoclonal antibodies. Initially in university clinics,” Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) announced in Bild am Sonntag. “The administration of these antibodies can help high-risk patients in the early stages to prevent a severe course,” Spahn explained.
The costs amount to 400 million euros.
Monclonal antibodies against corona: miracle or disappointment?
The German Ministry of Health has reportedly secured quotas of two of the so-called monoclonal antibody-containing drugs. These are, on the one hand, the antibody Bamlanivimab, which is being developed by the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, and, on the other hand, the two antibodies Casirivimab/Imdevimab of the US manufacturer Regeneron, which are to be administered simultaneously.
In the USA, these drugs already have emergency approval from the FDA, but they have not yet been approved in the European Union.
Reduction of viral load
Monoclonal antibodies are produced in the laboratory and are designed to disable the virus after infection. In doing so, the antibodies prevent the virus from entering the cell. According to Regeneron, the treatment leads to a reduction in viral load, the amount of detectable virus, and a more rapid resolution of symptoms.
