More than 100,000 people in the United Kingdom have died in connection with the coronavirus since the pandemic began. By mid-January, nearly 99,000 people in England and Wales had Covid-19 listed on their death certificates, the UK Statistics Authority said today. The U.K. is home to about 67 million people.

Since then, several thousand deaths have been added across the U.K., according to official government figures. The country recorded the world’s highest daily CoV death rate after a sharp rise in case numbers linked to the new variant B.1.1.7 in December.

The UK government has been accused of repeatedly responding too late and incorrectly to the pandemic. Hospitals are under severe pressure. More Covid 19 patients are currently receiving artificial respiration than at any other time during the pandemic.
