The number of confirmed Corona infections worldwide has risen to more than 100 million. This is according to a data analysis by Reuters news agency on Wednesday. Covid-19 has now been detected in nearly 1.3 percent of the world’s population. Some 668,250 cases have been reported daily since the beginning of the year.
The worst-affected countries – the U.S., India, Brazil, Russia and the U.K. – together account for more than half of all cases, but represent only 28 percent of the world’s population. The hardest-hit region is Europe, which currently sees about one million new infections every four days. Overall, nearly 30 million infections have been confirmed in Europe since the pandemic began.
Vaccination campaigns have begun in about 56 countries. At least 64 million doses have been administered. The highest number of vaccinations per capita so far has been in Israel, where 29 percent of residents have received at least one vaccination.
In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports today more than twice as many new infections with the corona virus as yesterday. 13,202 corona cases were registered within one day. In addition, 982 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours. Last Wednesday, the RKI had recorded 15,974 new infections and 1,148 new deaths within 24 hours.
