Today, Monday, the government wants to announce whether Austria will unlock, when and how. In advance, there are conferences with experts, opposition and provincial leaders.
The pressure is massive, not only because on Sunday again thousands took to the streets. Retailers want to open, schools too, but experts warn. Yesterday, the chancellor, vice chancellor and health ministers consulted almost non-stop. What happens today:
As two weeks ago, the almost identical group of experts will meet and give the government their assessment of the situation. It will be rather gloomy.
The heads of all the opposition parties will be connected by video. Especially SPÖ party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner warned yesterday against opening steps. “The government’s target was 700 infections a day, yesterday it was 1,400. The numbers are too high. To relax now means exposing the population to a risk that cannot be controlled.”
All nine state governors are coming to the chancellor’s office in person, with Burgenland’s Hans Peter Doskozil (SP) being represented by state councilor Leo Schneemann. The consultations are scheduled for two hours.
The government wants to hold one press conference and there is talk of a “broad podium”. No separate press conference is planned for the school.
This was completely open until midnight. The government actually wanted to announce a soft opening of trade, body-related services (hairdressers) and schools, but the numbers don’t give that. There is also another option: extending the lockdown by a week, but at the same time announcing concrete opening steps for February 15. The clear goal, however, is initial openings. Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) announced: “Together with the experts, we will once again discuss how we can create very careful and controlled openings in the first areas without taking too high a risk.
