Pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has filed for emergency approval of its coronavirus vaccine in the US. Subsidiary Janssen Biotech submitted the application to the FDA regulatory agency yesterday, the US group said.
Review of the application could take several weeks. So far, coronavirus vaccines from German company Biontech and its U.S. partner Pfizer, as well as U.S. company Moderna, have been approved in the United States.
The J&J vaccine has an average efficacy of 66 percent, according to the company. Severe illnesses are prevented by the drug at 85 percent, it said. Unlike the above agents, J&J’s vaccine requires only one dose, not two, to achieve immunity.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said a week ago that it also expected J&J to submit a marketing authorization application for its CoV vaccine soon.
