Brazil on Thursday became the second country in the world to surpass the 400,000 Covid 19 death mark.
With an increase of 3,001, the Ministry of Health now reported 401,186 victims of the pandemic. Only the U.S. has more official Corona deaths, with about 575,000.
Brazil is a hotspot of the Corona pandemic; since the beginning of the year, the more contagious variant P.1, classified by WHO as “of concern,” has been rampant there. On Thursday, the Ministry of Health reported 69,389 new infections. That brings the total number of infections – out of a population of 210 million – to more than 14.5 million.
About 80,000 people have died of corona in Brazil since early April. Experts warn that the numbers are likely to remain high for months – because of slow vaccinations and relaxations of protective measures. These have been made by some states because the number of deaths has decreased compared to early April, when 4,000 were registered in one day.
Governors of some states, however, requested “humanitarian aid” – in the purchase of vaccines and intubation drugs – from the United Nations in mid-April in light of the out-of-control pandemic.
President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the coronavirus since it began. The right-wing populist rejected protective measures and restrictions for economic reasons, and he cast doubt on the usefulness of vaccinations. Meanwhile, his omissions are being scrutinized by a parliamentary investigative committee.
