Today, Monday there are 820 Corona cases in Austria, the lowest daily value since October 5, 2020. Ten deaths were reported.
Most new infections occurred in Vienna (191), followed by Styria (188), Lower Austria (115), Upper Austria (104), Tyrol (85), Vorarlberg (43), Salzburg (38), Carinthia (31) and Burgenland (25).
The number of intensive care patients also decreased by 23.
Seven-day incidence below 100
About a week before the scheduled May 19 opening, the seven-day incidence in Austria has fallen below 100 for the first time in nearly seven months. According to figures reported by the provinces to the crisis team, it was 97.7 on Monday. The last time it was in double digits was Oct. 17, when it was 97.9. In addition, Monday was the first time in seven months that fewer than 1,000 new infections were reported. Ministries said 820 new cases have been added since Sunday.
Case numbers below 1,000 were last reported Oct. 12, when there were 979 new infections. However, significantly fewer were tested on Sunday. Thus, only 27,179 conclusive PCR analyses were performed across Austria, compared to an average of just under 73,000 per day last week. Of the tests reported in the past 24 hours, three percent turned out positive; last week, an average of 1.7 percent of the smears yielded positive results.
Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) said Monday that new infections below 1,000 and incidence below 100 show “that the opening steps in nine days are coming at the right time. We expect this trend to continue in the coming days and we have good conditions for the openings next week, when at the same time as the openings start, about three million people have already received vaccination,” Kurz said in a statement.
