Melbourne, Australia’s second largest city, is back in a tough lockdown. After almost three months without local infections and with an almost normal life, strict restrictions are again in place for the seven million inhabitants of the Australian state of Victoria. From Thursday (5/27) until at least June 3, all residents must stay home. Schools and universities go online. Offices will remain closed. Private or public gatherings are prohibited. Weddings may not take place. Masks must be worn indoors and outdoors at all times. With the strict rules, health authorities want to control a coronavirus outbreak with a particularly contagious variant.

New York is offering fifty free college spots in a drawing to all 12 – to 17-year-olds who have received at least one dose of the vaccine and are registered by their parents. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Wednesday (26. 5.), it concerns study places at public universities in the state of New York, including tuition, books and other required material as well as room and board – a total value of several tens of thousands of dollars each. Previously, the state had also set up a cash lottery as a vaccination incentive. More than half of the adults in New York State, with a population of about 19 million, are already fully vaccinated, but recently the momentum of the vaccination campaign had waned. Since mid-May, the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine has also been approved in the USA for children and adolescents aged 12 and older.
