China breaks the billion mark in the number of vaccinations over the weekend. But its own vaccines can’t protect everyone well against the Corona variants. Giving a third shot is now up for debate.

China has passed the one billion vaccination mark. According to the National Health Commission, some 20.23 million doses of Corona vaccines were administered on Saturday. This brought the total number to 1.01 billion, according to the data currently released.

China seals off cities with millions of inhabitants
China is using Corona vaccine from domestic manufacturer Sinovac, among others, to immunize its population. This has been shown to be less effective than the Biontech vaccine in a Hong Kong study, according to a newspaper report. People who had been vaccinated with Biontech against Covid-19 showed “significantly higher” antibody levels than Sinovac vaccinees, the South China Morning Post reported Saturday, citing a government-commissioned study by the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

Infections despite vaccination with Sinovac
According to the report, the Sinovac vaccine could also require a third booster shot in some cases. Recently, doubts had arisen about the effectiveness of the Sinovac vaccine against more infectious mutations of the virus, such as the delta variant, which was first detected in India. In Indonesia, more than 350 health care workers had recently been infected with the coronavirus despite being vaccinated with Sinovac, according to authorities. Most of those affected had not shown symptoms, but dozens had to go to clinics for treatment.

In early June, the World Health Organization (WHO) granted emergency approval to the Sinovac vaccine, the second vaccine manufactured in China. This means the drug can be used by the Covax international vaccination program, which supplies poorer countries with Coran vaccines. It is produced in the previously conventional way, while the vaccine made by Mainz-based Biontech and its U.S. partner Pfizer is based on new mRNA technology.

Authorities also reported a total of 23 new Corona cases on Saturday, up from 30 a day earlier. All of the cases were infections brought in from abroad, they said. To date, the People’s Republic has officially confirmed a total of 91,587 Corona cases. The number of deaths related to the virus is reported at 4636. The People’s Republic is home to approximately 1.41 billion people. China is thus the most populous country in the world.
