According to the Vatican, the pope is suffering from an intestinal illness that can cause fever and severe pain. For this reason, Francis has been admitted to a hospital, he said. Doctors there plan to perform a planned colon surgery on the 84-year-old before the end of the day.

Pope Francis has been admitted to a hospital in Rome for a planned colon operation. As the Holy See further announced this afternoon, the head of the Catholic Church is in the polyclinic Agostino Gemelli. According to the statement, the operation is on the colon. The doctors want to perform the procedure today.

According to Vatican sources, Francis has an intestinal disease. This causes protrusions to form in the intestinal wall, which can become inflamed. Doctors refer to this condition as diverticulitis. It sometimes causes patients pain or can cause fever. It is a disease that often occurs in older people. Pope Francis is 84 years old.

Before going to the hospital, the head of the Catholics had still held the noon prayer in St. Peter’s Square as usual. He also announced a trip to Hungary and Slovakia in September. Francis had part of his lung removed at the age of 21 after suffering from pleurisy. He has also been suffering from sciatica for some time.

The Vatican said it would release more information after the treatment. The hospital where the pontiff is undergoing surgery is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. As reported by the media portal “Vatican News”, popes have been treated there repeatedly in the past.
