The app for the “Green Passport” provided by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Federal Computing Center is now also available for the Android operating system. The digital application was already available last week for Apple products (iOS) and Huawei devices, the health department said today.
The app is intended to enable secure offline storage of EU-compliant vaccination, testing and convalescent certificates, including QR codes (on mobile devices). This is to enable easy presentation of the same when accessing and traveling within the European Union, it said at the launch on Friday.
No storage in the cloud
The data is stored by the application exclusively offline – i.e. only on the end user’s cell phone. The EU-compliant certificate is displayed in the app in a simplified version: Only essential information is then displayed, for example, first name, last name, Covid-19 vaccine and the EU-compliant QR code. According to the Ministry of Health, there will be no storage in a cloud.
The delay for the Android version was due to the review process at Google, the Ministry of Health told APA today – the app had already been submitted on July 1. Shortly, the app should be available not only via the direct link, but also via the search function in Google’s “Playstore”.
Verifying bodies (e.g. restaurants, cinemas, theaters, gyms) can check the validity of the presented certificate not only visually, but also by means of the official verification application “GreenCheck”. This requires a cell phone or tablet with a functioning cell phone camera. This is intended to enable event organizers to carry out simple checks upon entry.
