The number of new daily coronavirus infections in Greece has more than doubled within a week. Today, the Greek health authority reported 1,797 new infections within 24 hours for the country with its approximately eleven million inhabitants. Last week, between 600 and 700 new infections were reported daily.
A good half of all new infections affected young people under the age of 30, experts said. It is assumed that the increase is due to the nightlife – Greece had only lifted the nightly curfew at the beginning of last week, which applied from 1:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.. Another reason for the increase is believed to be the spread of the delta variant.
Greek media reported that the government is again considering measures such as nighttime curfews and travel bans – however, measures are to apply only to unvaccinated citizens in the future. At the same time, the vaccination campaign is to be stepped up, including mobile vaccination stations at vacation destinations.
