Those who consume open drinks in clubs and co. should be aware of the danger of knockout drops

With the current opening measures, topics come up again that have hardly played a role in recent months due to lockdown. For example, the Vienna Police reminds of the danger posed by knockout drops.

Party drugs: Recently declining consumption
Knockout drops are liquid drugs that have a narcotic and soporific effect in higher doses. These are usually mixed unnoticed into people’s drinks in discotheques, bars or at parties in order to stun the victims and make them compliant.

K.O. drops: What they are and how they work
The drops are colorless and odorless, taste salty to soapy, but are hardly noticeable in mixed drinks. At first, victims become will-less and easily manipulated. This is followed by nausea and dizziness.

When the victims feels the effect of the K.O drops, the perpetrator has time to take the victim to another place to commit an offense or to rob them. In further consequence, knockout drops usually lead to unconsciousness and loss of memory.

How to protect yourself from knockout drops:
– Never leave your drink unattended.
– Watch each other’s drinks with friends.
– Do not accept open drinks from strangers.
– If you experience sudden dizziness, nausea or lightheadedness, contact a trusted person, bar or security staff.
If in doubt, call the ambulance (144) or the police (133).
– Act quickly and preserve evidence – because every second counts.
– If you suspect you have been knocked out: seek medical advice as soon as possible.
– Due to the very rapid onset of effects and a relatively short detection time of about twelve hours, it is important to seek medical assistance immediately. The rescue or hospital staff should be informed in advance of the suspected knockout drops in order to ensure targeted care. Likewise, the police should be notified immediately so that possible further danger can be ended and investigative work can begin quickly.

“Do not leave an impaired person alone under any circumstances! The perpetrator could be watching the person and waiting for a suitable moment,” warns the police.

With the initiative Gemeinsam.Sicher (Together.Safe), the Vienna police in the form of the Grätzlpolizisten (district police officers) are also in constant contact and exchange with the bar operators and security personnel on weekends. The goal is to make nightlife as safe as possible with continuous discussions about appropriate measures and prevention.

“If you perceive violence against persons or are affected by such violence, they contact the police emergency 133,” said the appeal of the police. The 24-hour Women’s Emergency Hotline (01/71719) of the City of Vienna also offers care and assistance, and the Vienna State Criminal Police Office (Crime Prevention) also offers advice on the hotline 0800/216346.
