Germany – The nationwide seven-day incidence continues to rise on Sunday: it now stands at 6.2. Although corona case numbers are currently low overall, the spread of the particularly contagious delta variant is a cause for concern.
For the first time in about two weeks, the seven-day incidence in Germany has climbed above 6.0. According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Sunday morning, it was 6.2 new infections in seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (previous day: 5.8; previous week: 5.0).
Health offices in Germany reported 745 new Corona infections to the RKI within one day. For comparison: a week ago, the value had been 559 infections. Germany-wide, six deaths were recorded within 24 hours, according to the new data. A week ago, there had been seven deaths.
The RKI counted 3,736,165 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI reported the number of people who recovered as 3,634,400. The number of people who died from or with the involvement of a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 91,231.
Typically, the number of new infections on weekends and Mondays is lower than the weekly average because less testing occurs on weekends and fewer test results are transmitted. Although corona case numbers are currently low, the spread of the particularly contagious delta variant of coronavirus is a concern. On Wednesday, the RKI had announced that the variant first detected in India is now responsible for more than 50 percent of all coronavirus infections in Germany.
